"Salsa in Cuba -If you dance one round together you've done your duty, if you dance a second round together, this indicates you are interested and if you work the dance floor together after that, well then, there is definitely romance in the air. Dancing is an erotic one-night-stand without the sex. In Havana, directly on Cuba's main promenade, the Malecon, the city soaks up sun and salsa. On roof terraces with views of the water, dancing, practicing and training takes place. When dancing the salsa, cultural barriers disappear and whoever comes alone has problems remaining so. "For night trips to your salsa heaven, Cubans are quickly found" says Mario Claus from Berlins touroperator Cuba Startravel."

"You can't avoid it, music to Cuba is like sugar, cigars and pictures of Che Guevara. Even the reserved Europeans get into the swing of it when they stroll through sunny, dusty, stinking, wonderful Havana. Next to dance styles like mambo, rumba and chachacha is Salsa, the "Cuban Son" dance from the Caribbean. The next actual step into Cuban sun is inevitable. Especially when you hear music played all day long in restaurants and cafes. At lunch break, on the loading areas of trucks, spontaneous music groups spring up…and it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to actually learn to dance salsa. On our first day, Natasha was the dance teacher. She was covering for her partner Gilberto…with salsa it is quickly obvious whether this is about dancing, or whether either partner has something more in mind. The full art of hip swinging is hard work. The basic steps can be grasped pretty easily - once you get the hang of it and get the communication between head and feet happening. Moves with pleasant-sounding names like "throw away" or "say no" apply to this dance style: the male has the say, or better still, the sole lead. Communication is non-verbal - through the hands…"The man is macho" hollers Gilberto more than once, when a female dancer makes one more turn than Gilberto has indicated with hand pressure and shoulder tip…The chance to use what you've learnt comes easily in a city full of music, sooner or later there will be a time to dance. For example, you can dance with your taxi driver, if he declares himself to be a salsa music fan….perhaps the waiter at the hotel makes a date to dance with you at the end of his shift. Or you go to clubs, plazas or to senior-karaoke in the Revolution museum and wait until the other listeners just can't sit still any longer…."
